Are you new in an international MUN conference? This page is the right place for you. We would like to present your participation in few basic steps to understand what is your task and mission 🙂
1. What is a MUN conference?
Model United Nations, also known as Model UN or MUN, is an extra-curricular activity in which students typically roleplay delegates to the United Nations and simulate UN committees. This activity takes place at MUNconferences, which is usually organized by a high school or college MUN club. Students never represent their own country – to learn a lot about different countries and cultures. Students work in Committees (4 in ZAMUN) where every country is represented by 1 delegate. Then they work together in General Assembly, where delegates from a particular country work together as a team.
Check this page to understand MUN procedure better.
2. What are the benefits of MUN conferences?
MANY of them. Students become experts in recent global issues. They find out a lot of information about different countries and cultures. They improve their language skills, communication and argumentation. Students work in international groups, meet elite students from different countries and find a lot of new friends. Students take part in a lot of activities after the conference.
3. Registration
The organizing team needs basic information about the delegates and their committee and country preference.
If there are more students from one school – please check the committees together, their topics and country allocation. Then decide together what is your preference. This is just informational step.
Example:
We have 6 students participating MUN. The students can represent countries with 2,3 or 4 delegates.
Our students decided to form 2 teams of 3 delegates (6 students together)- so they need to choose countries with 3 delegates – for example Germany and DPKR. Students send usually 3 countries of preference so the Secretariat knows which country to give them when the first or second is already taken.
These counties are included in Committees – Germany in UNHRC, ECOFIN, ICAO and DPKR in UNHRC, ECOFIN, ICAO. Ask students to choose which they prefer. Germany will have one delegate in ICAO, one in ECOFIN and one in UNHRC. DPKR as well.
In the end you know the country and committee preference of your students.
After sending the registration form students will be informed about their final allocation based on the decision of the Secretariat. It is not possible to follow only the preference of the students, because many of them are usually interested in the same countries and topics. Therefore the Secretariat needs to take in consideration more aspects and decide. Delegates in MUN conference have to accept the final decision.
4. Preparation
Student will act as delegates of a particular country. They need to study the topic and their country position related to the topic.
Newcomers need to study vocabulary and rules of the conference.
